The Players

We have a very exciting line-up of performers for the 2010 Stradbroke Chamber Music Festival.

Freshwater Trio (Zoë Black, Josephine Vains, Eidit Golder)
Freshwater Trio is amongst Australia’s finest performing ensembles, known for its bold programming and innovative approach to music-making. Its members cherish the medium of the piano trio, equally embracing music of the past and present. In 2010, Freshwater Trio showcases the best in Australian music with performances in North America, including an appearance at the prestigious Vancouver MusicFest. As passionate educators, Freshwater Trio will nurture the next generation of Australian musicians through programmes with the Australian Youth Orchestra and local tertiary institutions.

Zöe Black, violin
Zöe joined the Australian Chamber Orchestra as assistant concertmaster in 1996 after studying and working in London with the London Symphony Orchestra and in Vienna with the Vienna Kammerorchester. She now lives in Melbourne and, apart from working extensively with the trio, she regularly works with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Tasmanian Symphony and the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra.

Eidit Golder, piano
Eidit studied in Israel and Melbourne. She performs regular solo recitals and has radio appearances around the country, as well as extensive chamber music commitments. In 2000, Eidit was invited to attend master classes at the Salzburg Festival and private lessons in New York with György Sandor and Richard Goode. After attending the 2004 International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau, Germany, Eidit performed as part of Stephen McIntyre’s Piano Landmarks concert series.

Josephine Vains, cello
Josephine’s formative studies centred on solo/chamber music with Tilmann Wick (Hannover Musikhochschule), Hatto Beyerle (Alban Berg Quartet) and Walter Levin (La Salle Quartet). In Melbourne she is a regular guest with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Victoria (Guest Principal), ASTRA, Team of Pianists, and is an organizer of the Bach Cello series.

Louise King, celloLouise is a dedicated chamber, solo and orchestral musician on both modern and baroque cello. She has worked with many orchestras, including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, the Halle Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic and the Queensland Orchestra.

Rachel Smith, violin
Rachel studied in Brisbane, Chicago and Berlin and is currently Principal 1st Violin with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. She has also played with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. She is an active chamber musician and has performed at the Melbourne National and International Chamber Music Competitions and the Osaka Chamber Music Competition.

Raquel Bastos, viola
Upon completing her studies in Portugal and the US, Raquel has worked with various orchestras internationally and performed as soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe, South Africa, China and the USA, as well as holding a full-time position at the Orchestra of Madeira, Portugal. Since relocating to Brisbane in 2008, Raquel has been working as a full-time musician, both with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and as a viola and violin teacher. Raquel is co-founder of the Brisbane-based Anima Quartet.

Wayne Brennan, violin
Wayne is Principal 2nd Violin with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. He is also very involved in the Brisbane baroque scene and is a founding member of the Badinerie Players and the Anima Quartet.

David Deacon, viola
David is head of strings at St Peters Lutheran College in Brisbane. He has previously been a member of the Sydney and Queensland Symphony Orchestras.

Irit Silver, clarinet
Irit is the Principal Clarinet with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. She has also appeared regularly with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. She has appeared as a guest principal with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and soloist with the Queensland Orchestra, and has played with the New Sydney Wind Quintet at the Huntington Festival. Irit has also appeared with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, and in 2009 she attended classes with Wenzel Fuchs and Alexander Bader of the Berlin Philharmonic.

Nicole Tait, bassoon
Nicole is the Principal Bassoon of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. She has also worked extensively with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and others, such as the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Whilst in Germany doing further study, Nicole performed and toured with high-profile groups such as Ensemble Modern, the Deutsche Kammer Philharmonie and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

John Parker, percussion
John is drummer with the acclaimed Brisbane jazz trio Misinterprotato. The trio have just returned from their acclaimed UK tour, where they received rave reviews. John also freelances with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and is a sought-after percussion teacher.

Rebecca Seymour, violin
Rebecca is a member of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. She is about to embark on further study adventures in Italy.

Daniel Curro, cello
As well as being a highly proficient classically trained cellist, Dan has studied contemporary improvisation. He has worked extensively with the Queensland Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras, and as a baroque cellist he has worked with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and the Badinerie Players.

Hayley Radke, flute
Hayley studied in Adelaide and is currently the Associate Principal Flute with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Lauren Manuel, french horn

Originally from Adelaide, Lauren is a current member of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra horn section.  Previous to her appointment in late 2009 with the QSO Lauren was a freelance horn player based in Melbourne and has played with most of Australian and New Zealand Orchestras including the Melbourne Symphony, Sydney Symphony, Adelaide Symphony and New Zealand Symphony Orchestras. Lauren also enjoys swimming, riding her bike and making music with her buddies in the Queensland Symphony and especially looking forward to performing in the Stradbroke Chamber music festival.

Harry Wilson, didjeridu virtuoso

As well as being a violinist with The Queensland Symphony Orchestra for over 26 years, Harold is an accomplished Didjeriduist. He is an “Honorary Tribal member”of the Iriridja Moiety of Arnhnem Land. Harry is a sought-after didjeridu performer and teacher around Queensland.  He was soloist in Peter Sculthorpe’s ‘Earth Cry’ with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in 2009.

Anneliese Berglind, soprano

Liz Chee, oboe
Liz has played with most orchestras in Australasia, including the New Zealand Symphony, the Auckland Philharmonic, the Tasmanian Symphony, the Australian Opera and Ballet and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and is currently on a contract with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra as Associate Principal oboe. Liz is also a member of the Musica Viva Wind Quintet, The Chambermaids.

Warwick Potter, conductor

Warwick Potter is one of Australia’s leading conductors having engagements
with Adelaide, Queensland and West Australian Symphony Orchestras in 2010.
In addition, he is presently Musical Director - Brisbane Philharmonic
Orchestra, Conductor - Queensland Youth Orchestra Wind Symphony, Conductor -
University of Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Conductor - Queensland
Junior Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra. Recently moved to Queensland, this
is his debut for Stradbroke Chamber Music Festival.

And special guests: Stradbroke personality Mr Col Cunnington and children from the Dunwich State School.
